Paint quantities are simple; paint labour is not. The same wall area takes very different hours depending on substrate, preparation, number of coats and access, so surfaces are grouped by system rather than totalled as one area.
Trim, doors, frames and ceilings are measured on their own because they carry cut-in labour that bears no relation to open wall area. Specialty coatings, intumescent paint and floor systems are always separate lines.
